Do I need the clinic’s regeneration cream?

You need a moist cover. The brand matters less.
Can I just use Vaseline?

Yes. For raw spots, it’s a very good seal.
When can I use retinol again?

When the peeling and stinging stop. Not before.
The cream handed to you at the front desk after a laser is not medicine. It is a lid.
Short answer:
- A laser that breaks the skin’s surface leaves a small, controlled wound. What it needs most is to stay moist and covered, so it closes without a thick scab.
- Any plain, fragrance-free balm or ointment can do that job, plain petrolatum (Vaseline) included. The word “regeneration” on the tube adds little.
- “Use only the regeneration cream” really means: no retinol, acids or vitamin C until the skin has healed.
What does a laser actually do to your skin?
Fractional and CO2 lasers break the skin’s outer layer on purpose; gentle laser toning barely touches it (pico vs laser toning).
That outer layer works like roof tiles. When the tiles are broken, water escapes. The skin feels tight, dries out and forms crusts.
After HIFU or injections the routine is different: see after HIFU or Thermage and after Rejuran or filler.
Why does a moist wound heal faster?
In a classic 1962 experiment on pigs, shallow wounds kept moist under plastic film grew new skin faster than wounds left to dry and scab [1]. The American Academy of Dermatology says the same for everyday cuts: “wounds with scabs take longer to heal” [2].
So the cream has three real jobs: seal in water, calm without stinging, and keep fingers off.
Why does healing speed matter for dark spots?
Inflamed skin can leave a brown mark, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). It is more common in skin that tans easily: types III, IV and darker.
In a Hong Kong study of fractional laser in Chinese patients, darkening followed about 7 to 12 of every 100 sessions, and the risk depended on the laser settings [3]. Settings are your clinic’s job; the healing days are yours.
My reasoning: the shorter the raw, inflamed phase, the fewer chances for a mark. That is clinical judgement, not a proven fact. Once the surface closes, daily sunscreen protects the new skin.
What does “use only the regeneration cream” really mean?
It mostly means what not to use while the skin is open or peeling:
- Retinol and other retinoids
- Acids: AHA, BHA, acid pads, vitamin C serums
- Scrubs and spicule serums
- Fragrance, and anything you have never tried
Do EGF, cica or PDRN creams heal you faster?
Honestly, the “regeneration” evidence is thinner than the marketing.
- Cica (centella): in one trial of 30 people after an erbium laser, a pharmacy-grade centella gel on half the face reduced redness and crusting in the first week versus a plain gel [4]. A standardised extract, not a cosmetic cream.
- Panthenol: on skin irritated in the lab, a panthenol cream sped up barrier repair versus the same cream without it [5].
- EGF and PDRN creams: the human studies I have seen after laser are small. My reading, not a formal review.
- Plain petrolatum: in a trial of 922 skin surgery patients, it healed as well as an antibiotic ointment, with no allergic reactions [6]. Different wounds, same principle.
So cica and panthenol are good because they are gentle moisturisers, not magic. Here is a Korean cica and panthenol balm I’d pick.
Why do Korean clinics hand you their own cream?
Honestly, because it is simpler than the alternative. If I say “use what you have at home,” most patients do not know what is in their creams, and I cannot know every cosmetic on the market either. Explaining all of the above takes longer than the laser did.
So I read the label of one product I trust and hand that over. It is a shortcut, not a secret formula.
If you would rather not buy it, photograph the ingredient list of the cream you already own and ask an AI whether anything in it could irritate broken skin: fragrance, acids, retinoids, alcohol, essential oils. Then show the answer to your clinic. More in Korean clinics, honestly.
What I tell my patients
- Thin layer, often. Re-apply whenever skin feels tight. Lukewarm water, no scrubbing.
- Do not pick the crusts.
- Call your clinic the same day for yellow oozing, pain that gets worse after the first days, spreading redness or heat, blisters, or fever.

FAQ
What should I put on my face after laser treatment?
Follow your clinic’s sheet first. In general, a plain, fragrance-free balm or ointment, applied thinly and often, keeps the skin moist while it heals. Add sunscreen every day once the surface has closed.
Can I use Vaseline after a laser?
For most people, yes. Plain petrolatum is a strong, low-allergy seal and suits raw or crusting spots. If your clinic gave you a specific product, use that instead.
Is cica cream good after laser?
It can be a good gentle choice. One small trial found a pharmacy-grade centella gel reduced redness after laser [4], but cosmetic cica creams have not been tested the same way. Pick one without fragrance.
